Preparing Your Upper Jaw For Dental Implants

After a back tooth in the upper jaw is lost, the bone underneath can shrink, and the sinus above it can expand into that space. If there isn’t enough bone height left, a dental implant may not have a secure foundation. A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, gently raises the sinus membrane and adds bone graft material to create room for an implant.

You may need a sinus lift if:

Before surgery, we take X-rays and review your health history to plan the procedure. A sinus lift is done under local anaesthetic, and mild swelling or tenderness for a few days afterward is common. The graft usually needs several months to heal before the implant is placed, although in some cases both can be done in the same visit.

We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions, such as avoiding blowing your nose and strenuous activity for a short time, to help the area heal properly.
